1). Does Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation fund organizations outside the state of Virginia?

CTF will consider grant requests outside of Virginia that are generalizable within the field of transfusion medicine.

2). How long does it take for a proposal to be approved?

The entire process can take as little as 45 days or up to 8 months depending on when your application was submitted within the Grant Cycle.

3). If we have one CTF Grant, can we apply for a different CTF grant?

Yes. There is currently no limit on the number of grant applications.

4). Do you accept unsolicited proposals?

CTF accepts unsolicited Letters of Inquiry. However, CTF does not accept unsolicited Grant Applications. Applicants whose Letters of Inquiry are approved for further evaluation will receive an invitation to submit a full grant proposal.

6). Where can I find the application forms?

CTF only accepts Letters of Inquiry and Applications that are submitted through its on-line grants management PORTAL. A pdf version can be found on the DOCUMENTS page of our website.The pdf is for reference only. CTF only accepts LOIs and applications through it’s PORTAL.

7). What types of grants does the Foundation award?

CTF only considers grant requests that are directly tied to transfusion medicine and that contribute to the overall body of knowledge. Applicants should thoroughly review the GUIDELINES AND GRANTS PROCESS on our website before submitting a Letter of Inquiry.

8). When can I submit a proposal for funding?

CTF accepts Letters of Inquiry (LOIs) on an on going basis. Applicants should not submit a formal application unless CTF has reviewed your LOI and invited you to apply.

9). My organization was previously declined for funding. Can I reapply?

Yes. However, be sure to review the Grant Guidelines to assure your request aligns with our mission.

10). Do I need to show other project support?

If CTF is asked to support only a portion of the funding for a project, the budget should include a column for the total budget and a separate column for the CTF contribution.

11). Where can I find reporting requirements?

All grants awarded by CTF require regular progress and budget reports. The frequency and content is determined by the complexity of the project being funded and the amount of the award. CTF staff will work with Grantees to establish the frequency and content prior to any award being made. The reporting requirement will be made part of the Grant Agreement.

12). What is a Grant Agreement?

The Grant Agreement is a legal contract between CTF and the Grantee. It details the terms and conditions of the grant award and is required before any grant may be awarded.  Once executed, the Grant Agreement may not be changed unless agreed to in writing by CTF.

13). Do you provide funding for scholarships, tuition, travel to conferences, or studies abroad?

Private Foundations must have approval from the IRS to fund scholarships. CTF is in the process of applying for approval. However, as of this date, we do not have the required approval and therefore do not provide funding for scholarships, etc.

14). My 501(c)(3) has a pending status; do I qualify to receive a donation?

No. CTF does not fund organizations with a pending 501(c)(3) status. Only organizations that are verified with a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) designation, as determined by the Internal Revenue Service, are eligible to receive grants.

15). What is the typical duration of the Foundation’s grants?

Most awarded grants are for a one-year period. However, CTF will consider multi-year grants.

16). How many grant cycles are there each year and what are the deadlines?

CTF has two grant cycles per year. Applications are due by May 20 and October 20 each year.

17). Does CTF support indirect costs?

It is the policy of CTF to deny indirect or administrative costs that are expressed as a flat percentage add-on (e.g. F&A).  CTF will consider costs (such as salaries) that are directly related to the grant project.

18). What happens if I need to modify my grant application (e.g., budget) after it has been submitted?

Applicants should assume that modifications will not be allowed after final submission.

19). Will it help my grant application if I contact a board member for support?

No. Please submit all communications regarding your funding request through CTF staff. As a private grantmaking foundation, it is important that all conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived, are avoided. Contacting a CTF Board Member directly regarding a proposed project, LOI or Grant Application will disqualify the project funding consideration.

20). How do I submit my grant application?

CTF only accepts Grant Applications after approval of a Letter of Inquiry. After the Letter of Inquiry is approved, Grant Applicants will have access to the Grant Application section of the on-line grants management portal. All Letters of Inquiry and Grant Agreements must be submitted on-line through the grants management PORTAL, which can be found under the grants “APPLY HERE” link.

21). Is there a minimum or maximum grant amount?

There is no minimum. Only in rare instances will CTF consider grant requests for payouts that exceed $250,000 per year. Potential applicants may discuss projects that exceed $250,000 per year with CTF staff prior to submitting an LOI.

22). Where can I find examples of grants awarded by CTF?

CTF posts descriptions of grants awarded under the Grants page.

23). CTF approved my Letter of Inquiry and the information was carried over to the Grant Application. However, I am unable to change the populated information.

Information from the approved LOI may not be changed on the Grant Application. CTF approved the LOI based upon the information provided which permits applicants access to the Grants Application. Information on the LOI should not change from one stage to the next.

24). I would like to provide more information than is asked for on the Grant Application or Letter of Inquiry.

The CTF Grants Committee asks questions on the LOI and Grants Application that it considers relevant to its decision making process. Further, the Grants Committee has provided what it believes to be sufficient space (e.g. characters) for each question. Applicants are highly discouraged from asking for special permission to provide more information.
