Our History

Over the next several years, RMBS’ reach grew to include Charlottesville and other areas outside Richmond, and RMBS changed its name to Virginia Blood Services.

Wellstar hospital system requested Astraea start a hospital-based blood bank in Atianta, Astraea changed its name to the VBS Group to pay homage to its Virginia Blood Service legacy.

Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation remains a private grant-making foundation providing scholarship opportunities for students interested in blood banking and transfusion medicine as a career, as well as MLS and MLT working professionals to continue their education.

Today

Richmond Metropolitan Blood Services (RMBS) was established in January 1974 to collect, process, test, and distribute blood for hospital patients in Richmond, Virginia.

1991

Astraea, Inc. was created to provide a corporate framework to facilitate Virginia Blood Services’ (VBS) of the Carolinas.

2006

Industry dynamics began to shift and-the VBS group saw a need to evaluate their operating model and determine how they could still make the strongest impact in the communities they serve.

The result was the decision to spin off Virginia Blood Services to the Institute of Transfusion Medicine.

Using the financial resources that resulted from the spin-off of VBS. Astraea amended its Articles of Incorporation to become the Commonwealth Transfusion Toundation (originally known as Virginia Blood Foundation)

2024

Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation also provides grants to hospitals in Virginia to maintain their modernized blood banks and transfusion services.
